You’ve heard of Workout Music. What the WordPress Tech Support world really needs is some awesome Support Music. We’ve got your back.
Technical Support requires a positive attitude, optimism, and honestly a healthy amount of cheer. No matter how well-coded your plugin is, users will experience problems and it’s very easy for them to throw all their exhaustion and frustration with WordPress as a whole entirely on you and your team. Maintaining “cheer” in the face of hostility is a skill that I help cultivate on our team.
To be clear, when I say “cheer” I don’t mean “fake” or false positivism. There’s not a really good word for it, but basically it’s kind of like this:
“I’m gonna let that insulting tone, or derogatory remark roll of my back and respond with detail and courteousness and resolve this issue before you can say ALL I DO IS WIN!”
What’s that feeling? Is there a word for that? I don’t think so. That’s where music comes in and expresses that feeling. Buffer has this great article about how music affects our mood without us even realizing it. My B.A. was in Music Education so I’ve always appreciated that about music in my personal life. It’s fun to apply some of that to our Support team.
Where’s the Music Matt!?
So here’s some music that I love personally for pushing through tickets, or very technical work. Our Support Guru’s Ben and Steve gave me a few gems as well.
The full Playlist has more songs. You can subscribe to the playlist here.
But there are some of my favorites.
1. “Twist and Shout” with Ferris Bueller for the 80’s kid in all of us
This song has to be watched. If you’re not a child of the 80’s like I am, then this may not work so much for you, but you can’t watch this clip without feeling better.
This is my go-to for just about any occasion. Any frustration I might have gets downgraded to a task after watching this. I mean, when that kid puts his hands over his ears! And the construction dude twisting it up!? Come on!
2. “Happy” For the Millennial Pick-Me-Up
Yes it’s overplayed, but man… if it doesn’t pick you up even just a little I don’t know what will.
3. You can Cross “Jordan River” with Mosie Burks
Sometimes I need more of a literal motivational push to get through a rough patch. When a support ticket has gotten to 10+ replies and I’m not sure how we’ll get this resolved, I gotta believe I can cross this river.
Regardless of one’s religious preference, Mosie brings out the best in all of us.
4. This “[Ticket’s] on Fire” with Alicia Keys
I’ve got three girls, and songs like this really make me want the best for them. But it’s also just a great chorus. Who doesn’t want to scream “This Girl is on FIIIIIRE!!” when they do something awesome?
5. Nothing Gets You Down when you’re “Staying Alive” with the Bee Gees
This is Senior Support Tech Ben Meredith’s pick, and I absolutely love it!
I’ve gotta say, I didn’t grow up with 70’s music in my house, but being born then must have imbued it into my blood, because I can’t get enough Soul/Funk. When I notice that I’m purposely avoiding opening up HelpScout, I know I’m in the wrong place. I need a reminder to keep going and keep Stayin’ Alive.
6. Try and Keep Up with Marty McFly
This is another one that has to be watched, not just listened to. I love how he kicks it off with “…and try and keep up.” If you get a ticket from me that says something like “Okay, let’s take these one at a time,” I most likely have McFly’s “Jonny B. Goode” playing as I type.
7. Knock Out Those Tickets like Rocky Knocking out Drago
Support Tech, Steve Struemph added this gem. This is the ultimate pick-me-up for anyone wanting to knock out just about anything.
For those who have met our Founder/Lead Developer Devin Walker we try not to imagine knocking out Ivan Drago though for obvious reasons 😉
8. “All We Do is Win!” on my Support Team
Seriously. Sometimes all you need is “And everybody’s hands go UP!”
Of course if you need to laugh while you win too, check out Emma Stone tearing it up on this song.
Feel free to put on our Support Soundtrack Playlist for your team, but I’m sure you’ve got your own winners. Let us know what makes you move and push through and maybe we’ll add it to our list.
